Patient Profile: Laura
Laura enjoys her job.
“I take care of sick people,” she said.
Laura has worked as a home healthcare attendant for 20 years and finds her service to people in need rewarding and fulfilling. However, her status as a part-time employee makes her ineligible for the company’s health insurance plan and her own health problems keep her from working full-time.
“I have heart problems and degenerative arthritis,” she said, “but I have to work. No one’s taking care of me but me.”
Laura said her ability to receive care at the Mission offers more than treatment of primary care medical issues.
“My chronic conditions require me to see other doctors, but that wouldn’t be possible without referrals from the staff here at the Mission,” she said. “I haven’t run into any problems with communication between the Mission’s staff and my other caregivers.”
Laura says she’s grateful to receive excellent care even though health insurance seems unattainable.
“I have no idea what I would do if I couldn’t come here,” she said. “That’s not true; I’d probably go to the E.R.”
